Questions

How is professional tax worked out?

How is professional tax calculated?

Find the slab of the state where the person works for the month’s salary (or the half-year’s or year’s income, where the state reads that). That slab’s amount is the deduction; a few states charge a different amount in one month so the year reaches the ₹2,500 cap.

What is the maximum professional tax in a year?

₹2,500 a person a year, the cap in Article 276(2) of the Constitution. Each state sets its slabs within it.

Which states do not charge professional tax?

15 states and union territories levy none on salaries, among them Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Staff working there carry no PT line on the payslip.

Is professional tax deducted on gross salary?

The slab is read on the salary or wages for the period as paid, so a month with loss of pay can fall into a lower slab. Check the state’s Act for what it counts as salary.

Why is February different in some states?

Karnataka and Maharashtra charge ₹300 in February on the top slab instead of ₹200, so twelve months add up to the ₹2,500 cap.
